Get away from it all

Haven't you ever had time you wanted to get away from it all? In March/April 1978, motherearthnews published a story about a couple who bought McLeod's Island — a 90-acre island off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. They have a few animals, spend very little on groceries, and are pretty well sustained by the island itself. Although it does present them with some challenges: "The sea, you know, is not called "restless" for nothing. A glass-smooth bay (as we've learned so well!) can churn-sometimes seemingly in seconds-into a windswept chaos of currents and combers. We've also seen that same bay (the one in which our island is located) thaw and then completely refreeze in just hours on a single December day. Winters up here can be especially variable. Continual spring-like thaws throughout 1976's cold season, for instance, kept our bay filled with slushy ice that was too thick to push a boat through ... but too dangerous for even a fox to walk on. We were marooned for three full months, from the first of January until the end of March. Last winter's record cold snap, on the other hand, filled the bay so solidly with pack ice that we could hike back and forth to the mainland for our mail and toboggan loads of supplies any time we wanted." For some of us, we find the Internet gives us the freedom to be able to work and live almost any place we want to. These people didn't have that luxury. I use the past tense as I can't find any current information about them. Who knows? Maybe the tide swept the out to sea. Life is full of sacrifices. Some are just more dear than others. Still, I don't think buying an island is in my future. You can read the whole article here. motherearthnews/library/1978_March_April/We_Homesteaded_an_Island

Credit card basics

“Which bank’s credit card do you have?”, “what is its credit limit”, “what type of card is it”…such questions are on everybody’s lips today. The world seems to have been squeezed and wrapped into a credit card. Nowadays everybody speaks and grasps the language of credit cards. The credit card syndrome seems to have gripped all of us. But are credit cards only beneficial? Let us analyze the pros and cons of this pocket plastic and see what outweighs the other. The Benefits of a Credit Card: • Keep heavy cash in abeyance—money is the most coveted thing in this world. Carrying lot of cash wherever you go is always a bone of contention. A credit card facilitates you to travel without heavy cash and have a carefree and happy trip or shopping. • Imagine yourself out for shopping in a wonderful mall. While you shop, you remember to take boots for your son, spectacles for mother, necklace for your beloved wife…but falling short of money! The credit card is your best friend in such a situation. • Even if you lose your credit card, you need not be apprehensive and scared the way you get when you lose your cash. This is because you can get the card freezed or blocked from the bank and relax. • Credit card works anywhere and everywhere nowadays. You just need to bag your card and make a move to any destination without bothering for money. • Loan facility can also be availed via credit cards. The Negative Aspect of Surge in Credit Card usage • Generally everybody does not meet the eligibility criterion to hold a credit card. yet in order to enhance their sales and as part of marketing strategies, companies, private banks etc. do away with giving these cards to who so ever caters even to the minimum terms and conditions. • The loan factor-the cards provide you with huge credit limits. The consumer ignorant of the forthcoming trouble, keeps on drawing money from his card and most often when he realizes his mistake, it is too late. He not only comes in the debt of the money he withdrew but also the massive interest that is charged by these companies and banks. • Many credit card companies provide lucrative offers almost every month in the form of incentives. These incentives are basically meant to boost the sale of their product. Incentives like travel programs, gas purchases etc. are a very common phenomenon these days. But one should not get lured by these for it is well said that everything that glitters is not gold. Initially the cards might be promising for some cheerful moments but once you become habitual of them they can land you in soup. • The addictiveness - it is most often the addictiveness of these cards that is a source of trouble. People, who keep on drawing from the bank’s or company’s credit, suffer largely. • Debit cards are believed to be different from the credit cards. But actually the difference is minute. A debit card can also be used as a credit card at times and there are some eminent banks that charge fee with the debit cards too. So more or less the situation remains to be the same. When you make up your mind to go for a debit card, consult some advisor. Know the details of the interest rate, the tenure to repay the amount and other such things. Do not be carried away by brand names. Just make a survey first and then decide which one to go for.

The Cincinnati Kid es a cerca de la batalla entre Steve Macqueen que es un joven jugador de pуquer conocido por "The Kid", y el veterano apostador de pуquer conocido por "The Man" actuado por Edward G. Robinson, durante la gran depresiуn en New Orleans.

An alternative to using an estate agent to sell your property

Traditionally, anyone with a house to sell in the U. K. would use an Estate Agent. As they were ranked 2nd in a Radio 4 poll of “least respected workers” (M. P.’s were 1st!), for many people they are seen as a necessary evil. A small minority of people manage to sell their house privately by doing their own advertising and putting up their own For Sale board, but as their property does not appear in the Estate Agent’s press adverts or websites, this is very much a hit and miss affair. Even when a sale is secured, the legal system in England & Wales means that until contracts are exchanged – typically many weeks later – the sale can fall through. In fact one in three agreed sales do not complete, meaning that the sale process has to start all over again. For anyone relocating or emigrating this is frustrating and annoying as plans have to be put on hold. For people with financial difficulties or in danger of having their house repossessed, it can be very serious indeed. A realistic alternative to Estate Agents At last there is an alternative to using an Estate Agent. Using a specialist property-buying company offers the speed and certainty lacking if selling on the open market through an Estate Agent. Companies like A Quick Sale ( aquicksale. co. uk ) are now offering a service that more and more people see as a better alternative than waiting and hoping for an elusive buyer. They will normally make an offer to buy a property within a few days, completing at a date to suit you, so that people can move on with their lives. So, what’s the catch? Well, the main one is that they will be looking to buy the property at a reduction from the open market value. How much of a reduction often depends on the type and size of property but is likely to be at least 10%. The other thing to watch out for is that some of these companies charge an upfront valuation fee of several hundred pounds. Whilst this is usually refundable if you go ahead and sell to them, it is quite possible that their offer on your property will be unacceptable to you, leaving you out of pocket! Questions to ask If the speed and certainty of selling to a property-buying company appeals to you, what do you need to look out for? Probably the first question to ask is – will it cost me anything to get an offer on my property? A national house buying company featured on Watchdog last year after many complaints fro people who had paid a valuation fee and then offered much less than their property was worth. (see bbc. co. uk/watchdog/reports/home/home_20051122_2.shtml) You wouldn’t expect to pay an Estate Agent for a valuation, so why pay these companies? The next question most people need answering is – can I rely on this company? Can they fit around me? These companies should be asking you about your timescales and deadlines and tailoring a solution around these. Look carefully at their literature and website to see if they are flexible and offer a range of solutions. It is also a good idea to ask them for examples or testimonials from previous customers. So, if you have a property to sell, before you call an Estate Agent, it might be worth checking out a couple of these companies who can offer you a quick sale. Solitaire klondike learn how to play

Since computers entered each and every household, classroom and office, solitaire became the most popular game. It is simple to learn, easy to play, and addictive because of its simplicity. But that was ages ago, and people have begun to grow tired of that same old game. As a result, they turned to new variations and Klondike is the most popular of them. Ironically, its not a new game. The term Klondike as a game surfaces somewhere in the latter part of the nineteen hundred, and historians suggest that it evolved from miners in the Alaskan and Californian mountains to pass the time. How Can You Play Klondike? This is not a difficult game to learn, but what's good is that though you will get the hang of it quickly, its difficult to beat in an addictive way. Its not frustrating, but fun and invigorating. One of the things you must learn is how to lay the cards out. 1) Start by placing one card on the table in front of you. Place it facing up. 2) Place another six cards to its left, but keep these facing down. 3) Place a card facing up to the card left of the first card you placed down. 4) Add another card facing down to all the remaining cards a bit below them so as to form a column. Likewise, continue by placing one open card and then by adding a closed card to the rest. If you follow the instructions properly, you should have it so that last column will have seven cards. Check also that you have twenty-four cards in your hand because these are the cards you will play with. Now What? What you have to try and do is place all the cards on the four different aces. These will appear whenever they do, and you have to try and create the four suited sequence from the ace to the king. The moment you see and ace, place it on the side and start adding the next card. (eg: After an ace, place a two and then a three.) Note that each suit must be according to colour and type. By this I mean that the ace of diamond gets only diamonds, the ace of spades gets only spade cards and so on. Likewise, you can create card sequences down on the base cards as well by placing the card lower than it of the opposite colour. For instance, under a six of clubs, you can place either a five of diamonds or a five of hearts, but the five of clubs or the five of spades is out of the question. Opening the Cards Facing Down When you can use the cards facing up, then you can open the card that appears under it. And like in regular Solitaire, when you manage to open a base card and have only six or less bases, you can open a new base by placing a King there. Moving Sequences You can also move card sequences from one base to another and this doesn't depend on the length of the sequence. All that matters is that the rules of sequence are kept. To use the cards in your hand, take the top three cards and turn them over. But remember that you can use only the top card. Only if and when you use that card, you can use the next one under it. Continue revealing batches of three. Once done, pick up all the cards and start again.

Fertility and well baby case histories

There are two events in my life that solidify my faith in the power of nutrition. These monuments will forever bring me backto that core belief that each of us has theability to control who we are, what we choose to think, and what we choose to do with our health. My family has an inherent weakness in the area of hormonal balance. I have three aunts who were unable to bear children; my sister has been unable to conceive, even after trying fertility drugs and lazer surgery; and I had surgery years ago to enable me to have the children I longed for. At this time, my surgery was called a 'wedge resection' and served to surgically remove a pie shaped section of each ovary so that the egg could penetrate the ovarian walls that had become thickened from fibroid cysts. With this history in mind, I was not surprised when my daughter, Morgan, did not menstruate. From the tender age of sixteen, her OB/GYN induced menstrual periods with the use of birth control pills. Morgan detested this, and would put it off as long as possible. The forced menstruation was debilitating, with agonizing cramps and heavy bleeding. Her doctor had also told Morgan that it was unlikely she would ever have children. I began looking for an answer which would help Morgan to achieve a period naturally. I encouraged her to begin a program of pau d'arco, essiac tea, and shark cartilage to help dissolve the cysts on her ovaries. She also included a combination of female corrective herbs which included red raspberry, alfalfa, dong quai, blessed thistle, and black cohosh to target her reproductive system. Along with this, Morgan took a combination of herbs to strengthen the entire endocrine system; particularly the pituitary gland which is the master conductor for our endocrine system. Within three months Morgan began normal periods, without the heavy cramping and bleeding that was a side effect of the birth control pills. She had mixed feelings about this; because she admitted to enjoying the freedom of not having to deal with menstruation for the better portion of each year. At this point it seemed the victory was won. Another point scored for the incredible power of herbs to return the body to homeostasis. However, both my daughter and I had naively stopped short in realizing that this restored balance could presage further events. When Morgan announced her pregnancy, my jaw dropped. Her husband, who had learned to accept their lives as being childless, seemed dazed. This baffled look he wore seemed plastered to his countenance from that day until the day their daughter, Sierra, was born. I will never forget the glorious moment when the doctor held up the newborn and announced, "This is the healthiest looking baby I've seen in a long time." About this same time, my daughter-in-law was expecting her first child. Wendy's doctor sent her to a High-Risk Specialist after the ultra sound revealed only two channels in the umbilical cord, rather than three. Two channels are meant to deliver nutrients to the fetus and one carries waste out of the womb. The doctor explained their concern that the baby could be born with Down's Syndrome, but would definitely be undersized, due to the missing umbilical channel. Wendy was monitored closely with frequent ultra-sounds as well as comparative measurements taken of the baby's head growth. We knew it was imperative to get as much nutrition as possible through that single channel. Wendy began taking raspberry leaf herb, alfalfa, kelp, and dandelion. The alfalfa was taken in concentrated form as this herb directly feeds the pituitary gland, which in turn promotes growth. Wendy was faithful in taking her supplements throughout her entire pregnancy. I had the good fortune to be present at this granddaughter's birth also. The delivery room was filled with no less than eight hospital personnel as the time approached for the baby's birth. The staff were solicitous and kind; and they were fully prepared for a preemie. When Wendy was in transition, and barely aware of comments around her, one of the doctors said to staff, "We don't expect the baby to be over five pounds." I stood on the side, with my son's mother-in-law, waiting anxiously as a chorus of medical students, nurses, and doctors chanted in unison, "push, push, push". Each time the baby's head crowned, we held our breaths, and then the tiny wet head would disappear. Again the chorus....."push, push, push". Finally that triumphant moment came when the baby slipped out and everyone heaved a sigh of relief, and a shout of exhilaration. Everyone feels as though they have somehow participated in, and not just observed, a miraculous event. Kaitlynn was born, and she weighed a glorious 7.6 pounds, had perfect color, and was strong and healthy in every way. The hospital preparations for an undersized, undernourished baby were not needed. The comments around the room were, "Maybe there were three channels after all." So a portion of the umbilical cord was taken to the lab to be analyzed. The result showed that, indeed, only two channels had been present. Two beautiful granddaughters. Uncertain beginnings...but with the help of proper nutrition, and positive thinking.....two very precious gifts. The information in this article is intended for education purposes only. How to start an internet business the first step

The vast majority of web sites are destined to fail before they are even built. Why? Because people building sites almost always put the cart before the horse. Actually, most don’t even include the horse. Evolution of Your Site New sites follow a typical evolutionary process. 1. The first stage involves slaving over the design of the site to get just the right look; 2. The second stage is the publication of the site; 3. Third comes the first thought about how to get traffic to the site; 4. Fourth, the discovery of pay-per-click options; 5. Fifth, the pursuit of PPC campaigns and realization of sales!; 6. Sixth, the “misery stage”, occurs with the realization that sales are being made at a loss!; 7. Frustration, frustration, frustration; 8. The “extinction stage” - With profitability seeming impossible, the PPC campaigns are closed and the site just sits there. Does any of this sound familiar? You need not suffer this evolutionary extinction! Taking one step before you build a site can save you a lot of wasted time and money. If You Build It, Will They Come? The first step to developing a successful web site is keyword analysis. Keywords are the anchors of each page of your site, a collective summary of your products and services. The first step to developing an online business is to identify whether there is sufficient traffic for your business product or service. Let’s look at a very simple example. If your are selling boating products, each page of your site should incorporate boating-related keyword phrases. You must analyze whether there is a sufficient number of searches each month to make your boating site a viable entity. A free method for doing this is to use the Overture inventory tool: inventory. overture/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ In our example, we would do a search for “boating” to see how many searches there are for the keyword as well as other boating-related keyword phrases. A quick search shows there were over 100,000 searches for “boating” and over 4,000 searches for “boating supply” in March 2005. These numbers suggest that there clearly is enough traffic to build a site selling boating products. Alternatively, assume that we want to build a site promoting our hiking guide service in Nevada. If we do a search for “Nevada hiking” using the Overture inventory tool, we find that there are only 100 or so searches a month. Should we go ahead and build the site? Probably not. There simply isn’t enough interest to justify spending the time and money. Unfortunately, we often talk with site owners that have spent significant amounts of money building a site only to find that there is little interest in their product or service. By performing keyword analysis, you can determine whether a site should be built before you spend the time, energy and money on it. There is little reason to build a site that has no chance of success.
